Configuring Windows Deployment Services for Veeam Recovery Media for Veeam Agent for Windows Baremetal Recovery
With the latest update of Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1.2 , it was announced that Veeam Agent for Linux now has PXE support with documentation on how to setup a Linux PXE server. But what about Windows users? I spoke with many Veeam Agent for Windows users who say that for Windows Agents, Veeam documentation does not provide much instruction past how to create the recovery .iso. For example you will not see instruction on how to burn an .ISO to a CD, or copy to flash drives using tools like Rufus or Ventoy, or what this post discusses, how to PXE boot from a VAW recovery .ISO.
Add Windows Deployment Services roles to Windows Server via Server Manager
Add Roles and Features, select Windows Deployment Services
Launch Windows Deployment Services
Configure DHCP and PXE Response tab according to requirements. DHCP in my lab is handled by home router, Windows WDS/PXE Server should detect DHCP requests and provide boot options. We will add Veeam Windows Recovery Boot Image into WDS. Using a Windows based Veeam Recovery ISO, mount and copy the contents into a directory local to the WDS/PXE server. Select boot.wim and provide a name.
